a national commercial for the u.s. market, the challenge for this production was to create the look and feel of california in the 1960s while filming in copenhagen in the 2000s during the early months of spring when there are very few leaves on the trees and the air is cold.
many of the sets were constructed in a studio, and a lot of work was put into giving each environment an aged, lived-in feel. this is not a true period film, by any means, and there was not an allegiance to just one period. we used authentic wallpaper designs from the 1930s and tile lay-outs from the 1970s, juxtaposed with a number of actual locations in the city of copenhagen. the muscle cars were brought in from sweden (which has a strong tradition for american car culture).
this is the first spot that i filmed with director jan gleie, and i really enjoyed working with his fluid, intuitive approach. jens måsbøl was the d.p., who has the appealing quality of being able to push those around him to do their best work. the models working in this spot were based in london, paris, new york, los angeles, and even copenhagen.
on an anecdotal note, principal photography took place at the same time as one of denmark’s largest cultural events in the new century the royal wedding between the crown prince and mary donaldson (of australia), meaning that we had to work around an extra 500.000 people milling about the city while we were filming and moving from one location to another, and, during this time, the city shut down, declaring the wedding a national holiday that lasted several days.
