DETAILS
the most demanding task for the production design in this commercial was to convert an empty dockyard warehouse into a functioning airport terminal. eastern european airports have that fantastically faded look of triumphant optimism from the late 1960s and early 1970s; so that aesthetic provided the guiding theme to the production design.
all of the décor and signage (with original iconography) were specifically created for this spot. as the location had been closed by the port authority of copenhagen, all props and airport equipment were also brought in.
this commercial launched the sirius campaign into northern europe, and it offered me yet another opportunity to work with director martin aamund, while it marked the first time that i had a chance to work with icelandic cinematographer karl óskarsson.
admittedly, this is an unusually dark and brooding commercial, a sober pseudo-social realistic film noir rather than the vibrant lifestyle films that martin aamund is known for. for a production designer, creating this kind of universe is terrifically satisfying. there was ample time to do the research and the design, and there were few restraints on the kind of input that i was able to provide.
like many other commercials that i’ve production designed, the use of multiple practicals played a large role in defining the film’s look, especially in the other locations. given the dramatic lighting, special attention was paid to textures (in both the furnishings and the wardrobe) as well as to strong non-primary colours, such as the caramel, rusty orange, dark forest green and deep blood red.

anecdote #1: in the airport location, there are two sets of orange benches (with three bucket chairs each )that i have customed designed for this spot. the chairs were later used as a featured prop in one of denmark's most popular television series, langt fra las vegas (far from las vegas), and presently, the chairs are part of the permanent installation at mammutteatre (the mammoth theater) in copenhagen.
